Winter-een-mas

The first Winter-een-mas comic was posted on Ctrl-Alt-Del on January 27, 2003. It was meant as an amusing story arc about one of the main characters dive into psychosis, and artist Tim Buckley had not expected the holiday to explode.

But explode it did, and by the following year people were starting to follow the holiday. By 2005 it had taken on a life of its own, becoming an international sensation. Now it is even recognized by major chain stores such as EB Games.

Winter-een-mas in St. John’s

The first event held actually pre-dates the group itself. It was organized by Jennifer, Rebecca and Leslie who thought it’d be a lot of fun to celebrate this gaming event. Taking place in 2006 it was held in Corte Real (near Burton’s Pond, MUN campus), with the assistance of the Burton’s Pond Student Association. As it was winding down they were talking about how well it went, and how attendees had been saying they should hold gaming events more often. In discussing how to go about doing that, many other event ideas were brought forward, and thus the MUN Geek Society, precursor to The Geek Society, was born. You can view images from the first Winter-een-mas here.

In 2007 the tradition was continued, and was again held in Corte Real. While a winter storm unfortunately kept many from attending, it was still a lot of fun with almost 50 people taking part. Unfortunately the images from this year got lost somewhere along the way.

Each year since that first day St. John's primary Winter-een-mas celebration has gotten bigger and better! We're looking forward to doing it all again in 2010!
